"Baix La Mar" Neighbourhood
HISTORIC, PICTURESQUE AND EMBLEMATIC NEIGHBOURHOOD
It is one of the old quarters of Denia, built in 16th century, between the castle walls and the port. The buildings and the current urban image of the neighborhood "Baix la Mar" has its origin in the S. XIX, although part of the plot and location were already occupied by the Arabs with the name of "raval de la mar" or maritime. Of the four suburbs of the Islamic period, this was, in all probability, the most relevant of the three that were located by the sea, since it was directly linked to the port.
It is a very picturesque neighbourhood that stands out for its Mediterranean character.
It has low rise houses, squares and corners with charm, as for example the squares of Sant Antoni and de la Creu, in the latter draws the attention the stone cross that gives name to the square and a devotional ceramic tile panel of the 18th century.
On the way between the two squares is a life-size bronze sculpture depicting the figure of a playmobil, in tribute to the 50th anniversary of the filming in the city of the John Paul Jones film.
Its mostly pedestrian streets and its maritime façade in front of the port, make up a pleasant promenade area with a multitude of terraces and a wide traditional gastronomic offer.
MARITIME ORIGIN
It is of marine origin. The link to the sea has always been present in this corner of Denia, since here until the decade of the 70s, sailors and fishermen have lived surrounded by warehouses and the disturbance of the maritime trade.
